I have noted earlier that we stayed here, at a lovely cottage. With the cottage came a complimentary bottle of whisky, and a distillery tour. We potetgull for the special though, and it really was. The price were rather steep, 40£ I think, but it was worth it.</div><b>The tour</b><br />
First of all, we got our own personal guide, and we got to do the round in our own tempo. This is very nice as we experienced being left behind on several other visits. The guide knew what she was talking about, and was pleasant company all along. Made us feel welcome. A job well done.<br />
At what usually is the end of the tour, the value unfolded itself. We were shown into one of the warehouses, got to meet the manager, and got to taste new make and whisky from both sherry and bourbon barrels. The warehouse manager spent at least half an hour with us, and we had a very good chat. Drinking whisky from the barrels and photographing.<br />

After this we was escorted to the bar and was served a selection of the distillery expressions. As much as we could drink, actually, but sadly we had to move on for lunch and the visit to Kilchoman.<br />
<b>The visitor centre</b><br />
There was the bar, a restaurant and the shop, all quite nice, bot nothing out of the ordinary.<br />
<b>The shop</b><br />
A good selection of what the distillery has to offer, and the usual stuff. What you'd expect, but not much more.<br />
<b>Overall verdict</b><br />
Having such an offering as the special tour makes the Bowmore visit much more interesting than the standard tourist offering. That sets Bowmore apart. A visit to Bowmore is absolutely recomended.<br />
The special tour has to be booked in advance though.<br />

So, here is a few pointers divided into subjects, just to make it easier to understand</p> <h3>1. Before the visit</h3> <p>It should be easy to visit a distillery. For most, it is part of a vacation and the effort to find out where and when should be small. An accessible website is a first. This should not be based on flash, cause it is unreadable on most cell- and smart phones. If an appointment is needed, state so, clearly, and make sure there is someone to answer the phone.</p> <h3>2. The tour itself</h3> <p>There should be more than one option. A lot of us have seen mash tuns and stills before. We want to know why your distillery is special. What do you do that is special? Why do your stills look like they do? How does your new make taste? What’s so special about those mash tuns? And so on.</p> <p>The guides should know what they are talking about, and be enthusiastic about it. I’ve met scripted guides and it really sucks. Citing marketing mumbo jumbo with no connections to reality, what so ever.</p> <p>A “multimedia experience” should be just that, and not something you could watch on youtube in the comfort of your own home. If all you can come up with is a video, resembling a TV commersial. leave it, it’s just a waste of time.</p> <p>A lot of us are actually willing to pay extra to get an interesting tour at your distillery.</p> <h3>3. The visitor centre</h3> <p>How much effort one puts in this is based on the number of visitors. I understand that. But, there should be, at least:</p> <ul> <li>Interesting stuff to look at and excamine. Good museum stuff. Related to the distillery and it’s history, of course. Models of what it looked like when first founded. Pictures from days gone by and so on.</li> <li>A shop. With the range of whiskies, of course. Aside from that, one should try to be original and interesting and avoid the typical souvenir shop items.</li> <li>A nice quiet bar/pub to sit down and enjoy the offerings of the distillery.</li> <li>Good food</li> </ul> <p>I will elaborate on this one as I come up with other ideas, but it will be based on what I like from my distillery visits and what is possible to achive without to much effort.</p> <p>Until next time. <strong>A rainy morning in march, we stood at the door step of Ardbeg distillery. This was our first distillery visit, of several on this trip to Islay. Distillery visits were actually the purpose of the vacation.</strong><br />
Here we learned our first lesson regarding distillery visits: Allways check the distillery’s own webpage for tour hours, cause we missed those with a mile.<br />

This is the standard offering and nothing more, if there is an offer that includes more than this, it isn’t stated anywhere.<br />
The guide seemed both knowledgable and enthusiastic enough about the whisky and brand, and the tour was pleasant enough. We shared the tour with three germans who seemed to enjoy it as much as we did. <br />
After the trip we got a dram or two in the visitor centre, with a free choise from any of the great range of Ardbeg.<br />

Contemporary looking, and stylish. There is also a restaurant there wich seemed popular with the locals, wich is allways a good sign. We did’t have time to eat, so I really can’t say anything about the food.<br />
<h2>The shop</h2>This is where Ardbeg stands out in comparison to several others. Someone has put effort into this range. They have their own tasting glasses instead of the standard Glencairn offering. This is nice I think, but it also messes with my collection of Glencairn glasses from the distilleries I’ve visited. <br />
Aside from that there is also some nice clothing, my friend John bought the hooded jacket, and I really wanted the cufflinks, but they were sold out. Clumsy.<br />
<h2>Overall verdict</h2>Not much more than the standard offering, and if you know a still from a mash tun, you might as well pass. I missed a bar, to sit down and enjoy a dram or two.<br />
The centre and the shop are nice though.<br />
<h2></h2><h2>The last personal twist</h2>While visiting, I saw a bloke around the premises wich seemed strangly familiar, and just before leaving he was there again. So, I asked, where have I seen you before. He didn’t know either, but we sorted it out anyway. It turned out to be Michael "Mickey" Heads himself, distillery manager for those not in the know. And we met at the Whisky festival here in Oslo the year before. We met again this year,by the way. <br />

Anyone under age will just lie, and the rest of us, wich are in majority, are just bothered by it. The distillery has a long history but was finally reopened, after an uncertain period dating back to the closing in 1981, in 1997.</strong></p> <p>Ardbeg is known for it’s peaty, smoky expressions, and this 10 year old is no exception. They are also known for their expressions without age statements, due to a limited stock of older whiskies and good quality younger stock. Among these is the Uigeadail, my #1 choise, more on that in a later post. I have tasted most of the Ardbeg whiskies, and have yet to find one I do not like.</p> <p>The 10 year old was finally launched in 2008, after a period of waiting expressions like: Very Young, Still Young and Allmost There. All good whiskies and hard to come by today.</p> <p>You will allways find this in my whisky cabinet, as it is a lot of whisky for the price, and it has all the characteristics that i prefer in a whisky. It really tastes coastal, with tastes of tar, seaweed, smoke and peat. Chris himself is from Skye and this is of course his favourite. He used to get Talimilk, a mix of Talisker and milk, to cure the flu when he was a kid. That really is growing up with whisky.</p> <p>This is a whisky with all the characteristics of an island whisky, smoke and peat, but I find it more balanced and complex than some of the other offerings.</p> <p>This bootle is a Distillers Edition from 2009, distilled in 1998, and is double matured, wich would imply that it is matured in both bourbon and sherry casks. This makes it a more accessible island alternative than many of the regular offerings.</p> <p>I like this whisky a lot, and since I don’t feel I have the nose or taste buds to give tasting notes I’ll rather share what other thinks of this whisky:</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://whiskyforeveryone.blogspot.com/2010/01/have-just-tried-talisker-distillers.html" target="_blank">Whisky for everyone</a> </li> <li><a href="http://boozedancing.wordpress.com/2010/09/09/whisky-review-talisker-distillers-edition/" target="_blank">It’s just the booze dancing...</a> <br />wich is not among my regular whisky sites. </li> </ul> <p>As this is a limited offering, tastings around the net are harder to find, but I do hope you’ll get what you want from these.</p> <p>Until next time. Islay a Scottish island, known as "The Queen of the Hebrides" is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides. With a population of only 3500 and 8 whisky distilleries, it is clear that whisky is important on this island. It is known for it's peaty smokey whiskies, but there are exceptions.</b></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"> As it is "a little" of the beaten track getting there is a bit cumbersome. If you come by car, there is a ferry, be sure to have your reservations in order beforehand. You can also get there by plane from Glasgow, with Flybe. On a side note, if you're flying in with Ryan air you'll be landing at Prestwick. Getting from Prestwick to Glasgow Int. Airport isn't that easy, but by taxi it is no more than an hour, and the fare isn't that bad.</span></span> <br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; font-weight: normal;"> Where to live</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"> There is a lot of possibilities, in the form of inns, hostels and cottages. Port Ellen is the port and largest town, while Bowmore is the capital and the most central of the two.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"> We lived in Bowmore, at the Bowmore distillery itself, wich was reasonable and very nice. You get an appartement, and can make your own food. The Lochside Inn, as mentioned in an earlier post, also seems like a nice place to stay. If you want to cover most of the distilleries, Bowmore is the most central of the two.</span></span> <br />

I visited in March 2010, and had a great four days, visiting distilleries, hanging out on the Lochside Inn and enjoying Islay hospitality. For anyone slightly interested in whisky in general, and Islay whisky in peticular, Islay is an absolute must.</span><br />

All whiskeys are from Islay and we just couldn't get enough of the place.<br />
There are whisky in every price cathegory and they aren't tasting like a camp fire all of them. Even though we are very fond of campfire, as well as iodine, tar, sea and other heavy peaty aromas you could think of. <br />
My wife usually refers to it as airplane fuel and, therefore, undrinkable.<br />
The Lochside Inn is a family business and a very nice one at that. We felt very welcome, the food was good and the Islay hospitality really showed. When I needed a computer to confirm my airline tickets, the hostess lent me her office.<br />

After being there I can believe them. You really don’t have to wander far before you find one, and finding one to your liking isn’t that hard either. My friend Tom is there as well, speaking on the phone with his wife. </p> <p>Good advice there, for boys on the loose like this, allways speak with your loved ones on a daily basis, and be sure to tell them that you’re miserable without them, even if it isn’t true. They had such a selection of single malts that they where organized alphabetically on the shelves, three bootles deep, and the menu was several pages with three coloumns on each page.</p> <p>It was also here that I tasted my first Port Ellen wich is an experienze I have returned to several times later. For those not in the know, Port Ellen was demolished in 1998 and does not excist as a distillery any more. Today, there is an industrial malting plant on the premises, and old stock is getting rare. I do have a bootle of it thogh, and am able to enjoy it when the whim comes over me.</p> <p>Back at the Stockbridge Tap, I also remember it as a typical local pub, off the beaten track, but still a place to find your way to if in Edinburgh.</p> <p>As I was writing this article, I checked on Google, and it seems this place has new owners and the food is not as it used to be. On Street View, the signs are down, so it seems this nice place is history. Too bad, but a great memory, none the less.</p> <h2></h2> <h2>Distilleries</h2> <p>Even though Scotland has well over a hundred distilleries, there aren’t that many around Edinburgh. I have been too two, <a href="http://www.famousgrouse.com/visit-us/visitor-centre" target="_blank">Glenturret</a>, which is The Famous Grouse Visitor Centre, wich again isn’t quite as bad as it sounds and <a href="http://www.edradour.com/placeframe.html" target="_blank">Edradour</a>, among the smallest distilleries in Scotland. They claim themselves to be smallest but after visiting <a href="http://www.kilchomandistillery.com/" target="_blank">Kilchoman</a> at Islay, among the youngest distilleries right now, I would have to disagree. I first got news of this late this summer, and since I've liked HP for some time, this was a must buy for me. As a scandinavian, norwegian to be spesific, I get to buy this special release in my local shop, Vinmonopolet. Talking about that. Why do we in Oslo have to settle for 5-6 bottles of this, while Tromsø got 20+ and Bergen around 30. At the moment it's not possible to buy it in Oslo, while Bergen and Tronsø still have 40 bottles to share. I actually feel discriminated at the moment, and partly regretting opening my own, as I was planning to have one unopened bottle in the cupboard as well.<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It comes nicely presented in a black wooden box, with the hjarta logo on the outside in silver. The bottle itself is the usual HP style, but the labeling is a little bit more special.<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I really like this whisky even if it differs from my normal preferred Islay whiskies, but I do need some whiskies in my cabinet that can be had without my wife throwing me out because of the strong odours. It's sweet and mildly peated, and has a nice taste from the sherry casks. I really need to get some more of this. As far as I can see the critics are praising it, and I feel privileged to have one in my whisky cabinet.<br />

This Is a yearly publication and I have also bought and read the 2009 edition. What would be the purpose of releasing a book with more or less the same content year after year? Let's see.</strong><br />
The base of the book is the comprehensive list of all Scottish distilleries, along with the articles of the distilleries are also tasting notes for all the scotch whiskies by <a href="http://www.true-spirit.co.uk/about.php">Dominic Roskrow</a> and <a href="http://www.maltwhiskyyearbook.com/writers.php">David Stirk</a>. There is also a list of all other malt distillers in the rest of the world. New this year is that the Japanese distillers got their own chapter.<br />
Aside from this there are articles on whisky history, on the state of the industry and other up to date writings on what's going on. The back of the book are filled with statistics on the state of Scotch Whisky in the world, maps of the distillers and other trivia of which changes from year to year.<br />
A welcome new addition this year was the <em>In Focus</em> articles that this year gave the various stages of the distillation process a thorough write up. Where they will go in the coming editions of the publication will be exciting to see.<br />
There was also a great many portrait articles of different distillery manager, so here is the chance of looking into the heads behind your favorite whisky and getting to know their own favorite. There is still a lot of distillery managers to go around, so this addition will stand up to time and I really look forward to coming portraits.<br />
All in all, Ingvar Ronde (Editor of the book) and the contributors are making a great job out of giving us this yearly update on the whisky world. I really enjoy all the well written articles and the comprehensive list of malt distilleries. Why is that so? there are several reasons:</p> <ol> <li>I am a beer drinker. Allways has been, allways will be, I hope. Beer and whisky is related in taste and in origin. Beer is made from malted barley, hops and yeast, at least the light pilsner that is the beer of choise here in Norway. Whisky from malted barley and yeast.</li> <li>I want my spirits to taste, and taste a lot. While the trend amon cognac and brandy drinkers is to praise the smoothness of it, I want my hard liquor to taste hard liquor, not something else. Even though I do appreciate smooth liquor, the complexety of whisky is what I appreciate the most. </li> <li>Scotland. After a couple of visits to Edinburgh, I do love Scotland. The many pubs, at least of Edinburgh, the hospitality of the people and the fun of goiing out there. It’s also in Scotland that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting destilleries and getting insight in the process of making this excellent water of life.</li> <li>But most of all, it’s the diverity of the drink. The nature of the process influences the taste on so many levels, giving Scotch Whisky so many incarnations. The difference between different whisky is what makes it so interesting. Two of my favourites are Ardbeg and Highland Park. Both are great whiskies, but the difference could possibly not be greater. What they has in common is a rich palate with a diversity in taste. But they are so different. <br />Another reason for choosing Highland Park is that I can’t enjoy the peaty Islay malts in company with my wife, she hates the smell of them, and me, when drinking them, so much so that I am not allowed to enjoy them in the company of her.</li> </ol> <p>I do enjoy other liquors as well of course; when in greece I drink Metaxa and Ouzo, after a good dinner I often get to enjoy a good cognac, or brany and at X-mas, as a true Norwegian, I enjoy my Aquavit. Et årlig arrangement til glede for oss whiskyelskere. Arrangør er <a href="http://www.nmwl.no/wiki/Chris_Maile">Chris Maile</a>, en kapasitet på skotsk whisky som arrangerer kurs smakinger og andre whisky events.<br />
Vi var 5 venner som debuterte på festivalen, og vi koste oss med whiskysmaking fra ankomst ca: 18.15 til vi måtte gå rundt 21.00. Dette var en kjempeanledning til å få bekreftet sine preferanser når det gjelder whisky, og en glimrende måte å oppdage nye whiskyer på.<br />
Her var det meste av skotske destillerier representert, og vitebegjærlige festivalgjester kunne øse av kunnskapen til de entusiastiske menneskene som betjente barene. Jeg fikk svar på en del ting jeg lurte på, som for eksempel at <a href="http://www.highlandpark.co.uk/">Highland Park</a> kommer med sin<a href="http://www.highlandpark.co.uk/whisky/limited/"> Hjärta</a> i midten av november, og at Ardbeg Uigeadail er min favoritt for tiden. Etter å ha smakt meg gjennom så å si samtlige av Ardbegs tappinger.<br />
Jeg fikk smakt meg gjennom en 8-10 whiskyer i løpet av kvelden og kommer tilbake med noen av mine inntrykk senere.<br />
